GenUnity Member Stories Episode 5: Sal Khan

In our latest episode of Member Stories, GenUnity Program Coordinator and host Whitney Sanchez sits down with community member Sal Khan—an openly queer migrant rights activist, exiled journalist from Pakistan, and founder of OUTnewcomers, a grassroots organization serving LGBTQ+ migrants across Greater Boston.
Drawing from their own experience navigating displacement and the U.S. immigration system, Sal works to connect LGBTQ+ migrants with advocacy, legal support, housing resources, and community care. Their leadership and impact have been recognized through two elections to the Massachusetts Commission on LGBTQ Youth, participation in the Human Rights Campaign’s Global Innovative Advocacy Summit, and ongoing service with both The Queer Neighborhood Council and the Asian American Resource Workshop.
In this powerful conversation, Sal shares their journey, the challenges facing LGBTQ+ migrants today, and the importance of building communities rooted in belonging, dignity, and mutual support.
Today, Sal lives in Cambridge, where they enjoy gardening, bird watching, and spending time with their son, Leo.
Listen now and hear how lived experience can inspire meaningful change.
